An Account of All Saints' Day
The accounts Don Pedro gives us, he explains to us why we are living in our town. He also tells us about the day of the saints, and what activities our people carried out; how, for example, they went to beg in the houses. It is the custom of our grandparents: they gave corn in the houses, they gave ayote, they gave güisquil. There were some who came to leave güisquil here, some came to leave corn, some came to leave squash on top of their dead, the activities carried out by the Catholic Church. He also tells us that some people brought food and came to eat in the cemetery., Los relatos que nos da don Pedro, él nos explica del por qué estamos viviendo en nuestro pueblo.
An Account of a Man Who Died because He Was Very Courageous
We are going to be told about a man called Salvador. He went to fetch his corn in Ixcan because he was very hungry in the town of Ilom, and when he returned he killed a tiger. So he left his corn hidden near the road and brought the flesh of the tiger in his house. After a long time, he went to build his house on the mountain, so if the neighbors had stored their ears in their granaries and he stole them, the owners knew, and they organized themselves to catch him. They killed him and left him buried in a trunk of a tree. That is all that we are going to learn in this work., Vamos a conocer sobre un hombre que se llama Salvador. An Account of a Man Who Was Sad about a Woman
Gaspar will tell us about a man who thought a lot about a woman. He felt very sad because of her. It was already noon and he saw the woman arrive at the place where he worked. The man was happy; he ran to her. She sat near the stalk of a pine tree. The man was already going to talk to her and he saw that the woman was no longer there, she disappeared alone, and soon after, the man began to tremble from the nothingness and he was heartsick for a long time just from seeing that woman., Gaspar nos va contar por un hombre que pensaba mucho por una mujer.
An Account of Chajul
The participant describes his town (Chajul). Why does it not improve? Why does it not generate employment? Because they say that the town is rich in the clothing of its people, and is rich in forests. He also describes what happened in the war, what damage it caused, and spoke of the municipal mayor's management, and what the mega-companies are looking for in the middle of the territory, and the eviction of their inhabitants in their territories., El participante describe su pueblo (Chajul). An Account of Forced Labor on the Road Construction Project
Construction of the road. The narrator says that his father in this time was a community elder, but they were obligated to lend this service without having a salary. The government of Santa Cruz, Quiché already existed, and since it was the greatest authority, well, the order had come from there to go to collect papers, books, and how there was no transport. What the community elder did was capture and force people who had a horse to go and collect all of the cargo, but when the horses weren’t enough, the people who carried went. They took their carrier made of wood (tumpline), they went with a load, and they returned with a load so they could eat during the commute. They only brought very toasted tortillas, and when they rested, they did so close to a well. They would make a fire and re-wet their tortilla in hot water and eat. When the government saw all the suffering, it gave an order that they had to make the road from Nebaj to Quiché, but it was suffering for them because they themselves constructed the road with their own forces. They did it in a form that was forced and free. They sent pickaxes, hoes, and crowbars to be able to destroy the large rocks and make the road. In spite of what they did for free, they mistreated them because when they got tired and tried to rest, they hit them with the root of a tree that looked like the root of the chayote tree. The construction of the road was based in sacrificing the people without giving them salary., Construcción de Carretera. Cuenta el señor que su padre en ese tiempo era mayor (trabajador de la municipalidad), pero eran obligado a prestar ese servicio sin tener un sueldo, ya existía gobernación en Santa Cruz del Quiché y como era la máxima autoridad, pues se venia la orden de allá para ir a recoger papeles, libros y como no había transporte lo que hacia los mayores era capturar y obligar a las personas que tenían caballo para ir a recoger todo ese cargamento, pero cuando no alcanzaban los caballos se iban las personas que cargaban se llevaban su cargador echo de madera, se iban con carga y se regresaban con carga, para poder alimentarse durante el trayecto solo se llevaban tortillas bien tostadas y cuando descansaban lo hacían cerca de algún poso, ponen fuego y remojan su tortilla en agua caliente y se alimentan, cuando el gobierno vio todo el sufrimiento dio una orden que tenían que hacer la carretera de Nebaj hacia el Quiché, pero era otro sufrimiento para ellos porque ellos mismos construyeron la carretera con sus propias fuerzas, lo hacían de forma forzada y gratuita, les enviaron piocha, azadón, barreta para poder destruir las grandes rocas y hacer la carretera, a pesar que lo hacían de forma gratuita los maltrataban porque cuando ellos se cansaban y trataban de descansar les pegan con la raíz de un árbol que parecía la raíz de güisquil, la carretera se construyó a base de del sacrifico de las personas sin tener un salario., Na'yla yol tii' u paxi b'eye', ni tal ak pape' as na'ytzan as mayulik vi b'aal aake', poro ta'ne tan nu kuxh itxiypu chaak as tx'iiel kuxh chaak ni b'anpe' as oy q'ii chit ni b'an chaak, as ni tal vas ib'aal aake' as na'ytzan as atik unq'a b'ooq'ole' ve' tu santa curuz, as tul uva' ni tul yol ta'n chajnaj va' la b'en eloj unq'a u'je' as komo ye'l ch'ich' as ma't kuxh txiypoj unq'a xoole' ve' at ikaay as chaak ma'tej ti' tijat unq'a vee' as oy q'ii chit ni b'an chaak, as tul uva' ye' ni tz'aj unq'a kaaye' as ma't unq'a  ijtz'ome' unq'a xoole' ve' ni taja unq'a ijatze' ti' iqul, poro ta'ne' tan kat kuxh txiypu chaak as kat teq'o ve't chaak chij imeexha tze' as ni toon chaak ta'n ka'va'l q'ii, as kat kuxh teq'o chaak tal ivootz' as tul uva' kat i'l chaak as a' kat i'l kat chaak k'atz chun a' as kat toksa chaak ixamal as kat imu' chaak tal ivootz'e' xe' tz'a'la a' as kat tx'a'n chaak, kat tilcha vet u ijlenale' va' ni  pal chaak peena as kat talcha vet naj va' la paxil b'ey, poro ta'ne' tan an kuxh chaak kat paxin uk b'eye' as kat kuxh toya chaak iq'ii as ye'l ma'l choom kat ib'an u ijlenale' te chaak, as tul uva' kat xe't ipaxi vet chaak uk b'eye' as kat ul vet asaron, bareta, piocha, as kat ul vet ib'ooq'ol u aq'one' as ye' kuxh isa' va' la txakeb' chen unb'ooj chaak as kat q'ospu chaak ta'n taq'il tze' ni tel iq'ospu chaak as ye'l chaak chooel, poro kat chit pal chaak peena tan ye' ni pax unq'a k'ub'e' oora as kam kuxh txumb'al ni chuk chaak aq'el uva' la pax uk k'ub'e', as mam peena ipaleb'e chaak as ye'l chaak chooel ti ipax u b'eye' ti' ib'en tu santa kuruse', Nebaj, IXIL-NEB-HIS-PAZ-2016-11-30-1029

An Account of the Village of Chel in the Past
Don Miguel will explain to us the reason for the name of the community of Chel and who told him. “My grandfather told me that its name was Tzi’ Ixchin A' and they did not call it Chel. Some men were the ones who discovered the place, or so I used to hear my grandfather because I slept in his bed, but little by little they called it Chel. There were not so many people, but there were still many trees. Here in Xesayí only Don Pablo and Doña Maria lived here. There was also Don Alejandro who was called Milisiano. That’s what they called him because our neighbors feared him because they could not speak in Spanish.”, Don Miguel nos va explicar por qué es el nombre de la comunidad de Chel y quien le dijo a él. An Account of Three Men Who Went to Look for Wicker and Encountered the Lacandon
What Don Lucas explains to us is the three men who went to look for wicker on the hill of Juil, and went and found the Lacandon. They fixed their camp and days passed. A day came where they sent the gentleman to make a fire because they were two young men and an older man. “Go make the fire, you will make the fire!” they said to the gentleman. “Okay,” he said. He went to put the fire on. He saw that he no longer had water and went to fetch some. The water was near the place where were they were. As soon as he started to kneel, he heard something cry. “Tch'ololol,” it said, and it had long hair. He kept saying tch'ololol. “Who are you?” said the poor man, and he did not answer. The man guessed [that] his name [was Tch'ololol], and after that he spoke to them. “I am the one who will help you, but I will go with you and teach your children because you are wasting yourselves,” said the Lacandon. So they brought him into the village (Chajul), and he came to fight in many struggles during the time he was there., Lo que nos explica don Lucas, es por los tres hombres que fueron a buscar mimbres en el cerro de Juil, y fueron a encontrar al Lacandón. An Account of Xe' Naaloj
They explain the reason for the name of the village Xolcuay. In the past, the houses were a great distance apart. Sometimes it took fifteen minutes or it took half an hour. When they named it Xolcuay it was because people stored their corn in their granaries. Everyone had granaries, and it is for that reason they named the town "In the Midst of the Granaries,” because the grandparents used the granary to store their corn in the past., Nos explican del por qué el nombre de la aldea Xolcuay. Adverse Effects of the Hydroelectric Companies in Ixil Territory
The words that are expressed are about the water that is in our midst. It has been damaged by the company in our territory now and there are tunnels in our hills to trap our rivers. The Ancestors Who Hid in Vessels and Died as Punishment from God
The story they are going to tell us is about the people who were buried in clay pots, who are now called Camagüil. It is not that they were disobedient and did not know anything, but that they had great wisdom because God himself gave them his knowledge. They died. Maybe now, one was discovered and the people of the present sold it; this way one had money. That is how the story of the Camagüiles during the time of our ancestors goes., El relato que nos van a contar es sobre las personas que fueron enterredos en ollas de barro, que en la actualidad lo llaman Camagüil. The Appearance of the Lacandon Man
When the Lacandón man became known, it is said that a man went in the mountains with two young men to look for wicker. They looked for a place to live. A few days passed. When they returned to the place where they lived, their food was already ready, and they asked each other if one of them prepared the food. They said no. There came a day where they sent a young man to fetch water. It is said that there was long hair near the spring of water, and the young man was scared that it was the Lacandón who was there. It is said that the three men spoke with him and brought him to Chajul, because he was very important. He also wanted to teach all his wisdom to all the children of the town, but the parents did not want it. The Lacandón also made a great war with the rich people of the country, but the rich were not powerful against him, because he had certain abilities of power.

Description and History of Nearby Mountains
Mr. Diego says that the mountain called Chaxmala’ is the setting of cold weather and clouds. One goes to that mountain to ask for rain and the sun. The mountain Lajam is where one goes to ask on behalf of the sick, and it is that mountain that gives the signal of when it will rain or when summertime arrives. The mountain called Laavitz—the sea passes beneath this mountain. In contrast, the mountain Tx’ab’al is where one goes to ask for the harvest. It is a source of water for the residents; that is where all the springs come from. If our ancestors decide for us to disappear, all the water will come from there to make us disappear. In contrast, the mountain Suul Aa is that which gives the signal when it is going to rain. The mountains serve as protection in the face of natural disasters. The mountain Vi’ Saachom is where they go to do ceremonies on the sacred days that are the Oo Q’ii. The mountain Xe Ju’il is where the maize seed emerged for the first time. If the people arrive before the mountain to ask for protection, then it gives it to them. The mountain is useful for asking on behalf of students. There are eleven mountains that surround the people and they are sentinels because they are the ones who give protection in the face of natural disasters. The mountain Vi’ Su’mal is protection because it was the one that saved many people during the war, and the narrator says that people say that some time ago, a foreigner came to demolish the mountain. Someone said to him, “If you demolish the mountain, we will make your country disappear in five minutes,” and that was the reason the foreigner did not demolish the mountain. Xe Sumal means “beneath the mountains.” In contrast, Vi’ Sumal means “upon the mountain,” but nobody lives there. The mountain Kaan Sivan is where our ancestors our buried. The mountain they call Kaj Sivan was named so because there is a white rock there, and Santa Marta mountain is named so because the first person to arrive there was called Marta, and that is how it got its name.

A Description of Clothing During the Participant's Youth
The narrator says that during his youth, there was not clothing like that of today; rather, people made their clothing with sheep wool. With sheep wool, they made shirts, pants, and sweaters. When they finished weaving the cloth, they perforated the body of it. Then, they sewed beneath the arm, and wore it to finish sewing the cloth. They used to have a wooden mold with nails. First, they combed the wool, then they put the wool on their mold to make the cloth. However, the women’s corte (traditional skirt) was brought here from Huehuetenango and it was black. The women used cotton to weave their güipils (traditional blouses). First, they had to turn the cotton into thread to be able to weave with it. They put the cotton in a sack with dried corn husks. Then they hit it with two sticks of the same size, and when they amassed a large quantity, they wound it around a stick. Then, when they were finished winding it, they arranged the thread over sticks to weave it. They embroidered designs like circles or little birds. He says that in that time, a type of yellowish cloth existed. Some people used this cloth to make pants. The women used  a band on their head and they made it out of a red thread, which used to be the only kind of thread that existed; red was the only color there was. The men used a hat, and they made it out of palm leaves. It was a very heavy hat. They made jackets and coats with the sheep wool. Sheep wool and cotton used to be the only material there was for the people to make clothes to wear., Cuenta el señor que durante su  joventud no había ropa como las de ahora sino que  las personas eran las que fabricaban su ropa con lana de oveja, con eso fabricaban camisa, pantalon, sueter, cuando ellos terminan de tejer la tela, le perforan en cuello luego lo cocen debajo del brazo y se lo ponian para tejer la tela  ellos tienen un molde de madera con clavos, primero ellos peinan la lana luego lo colocan en su molde para hacer las tela, en cambio el  corte de las mujeres  lo traian desde huehuetenango y era de color negro, las mujeres utilizaban el algodon para tejer su güipil, primero ellas tienen que convertir el algodon en hilo para poder tejerlo, lo metian dentro de un costal con hojas llamadas doblador  luego lo golpean con dos palos del mismo tamaño y cuando ya lo tienen en una gran cantidad lo enrollan en un  palo  luego cuando terminan de enrollarlo pues lo colocan en los palos para tejerlo ellas le hacen bordados como circulo, pajaritos, él cuenta que en ese tiempo existia una clase de tela que era amarillenta algunas personas utilizaban esa tela para hacer pantalon, las mujeres  utilizaban  cinta en su cabeza y lo fabricaban con el único hilo que existia que era de color rojo, ese era el único color que había y los hombres utilizaban sombrero y los hacian con hojas de palma, era un sombrero muy pesado, con la lana de oveja fabricaban chamarras y chamarritas, la lana de oveja y el algodon era el único material que habia para que las personas elaboraran su ropa de vestir, Isuuchil ni tal ak pape' va' kam toksa'min chaak na'ytzan, as ni tal aak va' na'ytzan as xi'l karneelo' ni b'anb'e chaak, as at chen tal ikaalaxh chaak ti' ib'anat tuch u xi'l karneeloe', as b'axel ni xee chaak as ti' vet u vee as kat toksa vet chaak ti' u kaalaxhe', as tul uva' ni toleb' vet chaak ti' b'anpu tuche' as kat kuxh ixot chaak iqul as kat toksa vet chaak, ech chen koj vet unq'a ixoje' tan a' u moorka chike' ni b'anb'e cha'maj u q'ej chike', as a'n kuxh u kaj chike' kat xe'ti as a' xe'tik kat tzan tu chinapul, as viq'enaj cha'maje' as a' u chiname' ni b'anon,  ni b'ali cha'maj tu saako xo'l jo'k, as at ka'va'l tze' ve' ni q'oson aq'el uva' la itxey tib'  as kat ijek' vet aak ti pechich, as kat iq'in vet aak as kat je' vet ti' tze' as kat ta'cha ku cha'maj ivatz, tal ch'ut, seter tuk' talaj tz'ikin,  as tamen tan ni b'anax txo' xi', rante'l, as eche' unq'a naje' as chanaj  ni b'anon ib'oob'al tuk' paalma as a'e' ye' ni maye' tan komo va'l talal, as eche' unq'aj ixoje'  tul kat oleb' cha'maj ti' viq'enaje' as kat kuxh ixot cha'maja iqul as kat  itz'is cha'maj tuk' iq'ab', as vik'alb'al cha'maje'  as an kuxh  u xi'l karneelo' ni b'anon as echat kuxh vik'alb'al unq'a naje' patej an kuxh u xi'l karneelo'e' ni b'anon, as eche' na'ytzan a' kuxh uk manta atike  ve' q'ante'l ta chen kuxh chanaj ti' lab' as lab'e' vee ni b'anb'e chanaj ti' b'anat isakurixh, as at chitu va' chemel chen visakurixh unq'a naje' ni b'anpe', as visinta cha'maje' as a' chen u txiie' ve' kereyo txiie' ni b'anon,  as vikamixh unq'a naje' as nu kuxh ixot chanaj iqul as ni toksa chanaj, as u sakurixhe' as nu kuxh itz'is chanaj ta'n iq'ab' as ni toksa chanaj, as tamen tan ni b'anax txo' xi', rantel tuk' u xi'l karneeloe', as a' chen kuxh kaayil u vaa' kat tal aak pape' ti' toksamin chaak na'ytzan va' a' kuxh u xi'l karneelo'e', tuk' i chiname' kata b'anb'eli ti' toksa'm chaak, Nebaj, IXIL-NEB-HIS-MIB-2017-04-12-1037

A Description of How to Build a House
A description of how to construct a wooden house. One begins with the excavation of the earth, which must be very flat before beginning construction. After, one begins to look for rocks to gather together into a base and the framework. The framework is made by putting together four wooden beams to create a square frame; in each corner of the beams, put up the beams. (The wooden beam is the base and they are planks 5 centimeters thick. They are used as columns in houses. They make up a framework of 4x4 inches, depending on the construction of the house. The rocks are used to prevent rot of the wooden beams.) Leave an opening for the door when placing the planks. For the roof, place a rafter and scissors. Depending on the style of the house (the participant talks about a gable roof style), when the previous steps are finished, place the roof on top, hammer in the laminate, and that's the end of house-building., Una descripción de cómo construir una casa de madera, se empieza con la excavación de la tierra, y se tiene que dejar el lugar muy plano antes de la construcción.
