DescriptionThis collection contains audio recordings of narratives, conversations, music, and the public performance of a comedic play recorded by Dr. Colette Grinevald (then Craig) as part of her doctoral fieldwork in Jacaltenango between 1970-1973. It also includes her published dissertation "A Grammar of Jacaltec" (Craig 1977). The recordings were originally made in reel-to-reel tapes and donated to AILLA in 2005. They were then digitized and archived by AILLA in 2006. In 2020-2021, as part of the CELP-HELP project, the collection was organized and enriched with new metadata and new transcription and translation files. The team included Vernon Chow, Colette Grinevald, Jorge Emilio Rosés Labrada and the Comunidad Lingüística Popti' of the Academia de las Lenguas Mayas de Guatemala (ALMG).

The history of Carnival
This folder contains the digitization of a portion of Reel 4, side B (see the scan of the reel-to-reel tape box) and appears here as JAC002R007|001.wav. This recording is also part of the larger file that contains all of Reel 4 Side B, which appears in the folder "Traditional narratives and conversations" as JAC002R001|001.wav. It is important to note that the content of the reel itself does not match the metadata on the reel box as described on the back side of the box (left-hand side of the scan). In this particular recording, Trinidad Montejo reads a text about the history of Carnaval sentence by sentence and Colette Craig provides the corresponding Spanish translation after each sentence. Jacaltec Comedy
This folder contains the digitization of Reel 5 (see the scan of the reel-to-reel tape box), digitized as JAC002R0012|001.wav. The recording corresponds to a comedy performed by a theatre troupe from the village of Yinchewex that had been invited to Jacaltenango. Additionally, the folder contains the published text of the retold version of the "Comedia" recorded at a later date (Craig 1976). Reel 2, This folder contains the digitization of Reel 2 (see the scan of the reel-to-reel tape box). Side A was digitized as JAC004R001|001.wav and Side B was digitized as JAC002R004|002.wav. It is important to note that the metadata on the reel-to-reel tape box suggests that the original content of this reel was stories, more specifically the stories that ended inside Reel 4, which appears in this collection as JAC002R001|001.wav and JAC002R001|002.wav in the folder "Traditional narratives and conversations". This recording contains a version of the story of Kat Mat (from the beginning and until min. 4:34) and a story about Esteban Jimenez, which is followed by some discussion and a Spanish free translation (from min. 4:34 and until the end; the free translation starts at min. 20:07). This recording includes two stories narrated by Manuel Díaz Montejo: Buzzard and Dove (from the beginning to min 3:33) and Joseph, a version of the biblical story (from min. 3:33 until the end). The Structure of Jacaltec
Based on nineteen months of field work in Jacaltenango, Guatemala, this volume is a reference grammar of the common syntactic features of Jacaltec, giving special emphasis to the structure of complex sentences. The author analyzes such universal linguistic phenomena as relativization, pronominalization, and complementation. The Structure of Jacaltec also address such language specific phenomena as noun classifier deletion and disambiguation by deletion., Basado en diecinueve meses de trabajo de campo en Jacaltenango, Guatemala, este volumen es un gramática referencial de los rasgos sintácticos de Jacalteco, dando enfásis especial a la estructura de frases complejas. Side A (JAC002R001|002.wav) includes several stories narrated by Manuel Díaz Montejo and is also reproduced as JAC002R008|001.wav, appearing in its own folder. Side B contains 3 distinct work sessions. These sessions were in turn broken down into multiple files by AILLA and appear elsewhere in this collection as JAC002R005|001.wav, JAC002R006|001.wav, and JAC002R007|001.wav in their own folders.
