DescriptionThis multimedia collection focuses on Cañari music in the highlands of southern Ecuador. Its primary contents are audio and video recordings of Cañari celebrations featuring music collected in 2016 by ethnomusicologist Allison Adrian. Central themes include music, ethnography, gender, religion, mythology, and history. Recordings were made in the following locations: Cañar, Sisid, Juncal, Zhud, and Gun Grande. The materials consist of approximately 81 hours of audio and video recordings in WAV and MP4 formats. Dr. Adrian’s research during this period was supported by a U.S. Fulbright Scholar Research Award and a sabbatical award funded by St. Catherine University.


The preservation of this collection was supported by the grant "Archiving Significant Collections of Endangered Languages: Two Multilingual Regions of Northwest South America" (PD-260978-18) from the National Endowment for the Humanities. Corpus Christi in Zhud
Festivities in Zhud, Cañar for Corpus Christi. A mass is held in a church whose entryway is decorated with a large arch adorned with fruit. The priest and dancers (mamadanza) lead a procession out of the church. Some of the dancers are interviewed. The recording ends with instrumental music by a small brass band of trombones, trumpets, saxophones, drums and cymbals. Two musical styles are present within the church - a synthesizer with hymns and mamadanza music (drum with pinguillo flute). Outside of the church, mamadanza music/dance continues and mestizo brass band plays music. Fiesta de San Antonio
The festival of San Antonio is a week-long celebration where the Cañari community within Quilloac honor their patron Saint - St. Anthony of Padua. The most intensive day of celebration begins at the Catholic church in the center of Cañar with a mass. After the mass, men dance with vacas locas (crazy cows) and kick off a day-long pilgrimage of the patron saint through town accompanied by a brass band (mestizo), and chirimía (dulzaína) & drum (Cañari) until the procession ends on the outskirts of town in Junducuchu where a pampamesa (communal meal) is served, rukuyayas (jokesters) entertain, flute music (contradanza) is played, and children and adults dance. Interview with musician and educator Pedro Solano Falcón along with University of Cuenca music professor Carlos Freire about Lalay Raymi and Carnaval. Tayta Pedro discusses instruments and songs associated with Carnaval/Lalay Raymi in addition to the Cañari worldview that permeates this agrarian, syncretic celebration. Worried that younger generations were not learning or practicing the indigenous practices associated with Pawkar Raymi (Lalay Raymi), overwhelmed instead by mestizo Carnaval traditions, Pedro re-invigorated this familial tradition by creating a public forum for many neighboring indigenous Cañari communities at an indigenous organization called TUCAYTA in the late 1980s for Cañaris to perform lalay songs and share food. Municipal Parade in Cañar
An annual parade put on by the municipality of Cañar in which "folkloric" music and dance as well as Cañari music and dance are performed. The region celebrates being the archeological capitol of the nation given that Ingapirca, the best known Inca/Cañari ruins in Ecuador, is located within the province. The parade is emcee'ed in both Spanish and Kichwa. The parade features Cañari musicians and dancers though many of the groups performing Indigenous dances from other regions of Ecuador are mestizos. There is an overt effort to draw tourism to the region for the event. Wasipichana
The wasipichay, or house blessing, for Pacha and Juan Carlos and their children. This multi-part ceremony is led by a healer that begins at a large chakana made with flower petals and other offerings made in the yard. The healer is Juan Carlos' aunt, Mama Michi, and the introduction to the event is conducted in Kichwa. At one point she sings a haway in the ceremony. Then, the guests gather together in a line and two other aunts sing a sulahuay (house-blessing song) to start of a procession through the house to cleanse it of any malevolent spirits that entered during construction. The procession ends with a stone indigenous cross (cruz chakana) and a long woven belt being carried to the roof of the house. The festivities end in a multi-course meal and dance party for the guests.
