Description | Doña Juana and don Eleuterio are two senior persons of Villa Las Rosas (doña Juana lives in the county seat, don Eleuterio in a hamlet half an hour's walk from the seat) who learned Tseltal as children but who now no longer speak it daily and did not transmit it to their children. They consented to speak Tseltal for the purposes of this recording. They didn't know each other and they were unable to establish a dialog between them, so that we proceeded to do the interview alternating turns at talk. In this interview they tell their life stories and talk about economic activities that were the most frequently practiced and which ones they practiced. Don Eleuterio tells about where his parents came from and what economic activities they used to practice or continue to practice. Doña Juana relates her personal history and talks about some beliefs concerning witchcraft. In some places they talk about forms of traditional healing and how someone who has suffered witchcraft can be de-witched. At the end she talks about the vitality of Tseltal. |
