Description | Adapted from Moore (2018:133ff) To investigate what specific landmarks might be known to speakers and salient enough to be used in direction-giving, a route-description referential communication task was undertaken. Speakers were instructed to think of a place, then describe a route toward that place such that a partner could guess the identity of that place. Participants were separated by a curtain to prevent the use of facial or manual gestures in completing the task. This method therefore elicited route descriptions that contain local landmarks that are (presumably) salient for speakers. This task was conducted with 5 pairs of speakers in each community. The task was audio- and videorecorded. Recordings made in in La Ventosa contain "LAV", those made in Juchitán de Zaragoza contain "JCH", and those made in Santa María Xadani contain "XAD". Filenames also contain references to the numbers used to identify the speakers (two sequential numbers separated by a hyphen) and a date code in MMDDYYYY format. |
