Description | Adapted from Moore (2018:127ff) To assess the lexical availability of landscape terms, a free-list task with 10 speakers in each community was conducted. The free-list phase was immediately followed by a semantic analysis elicitation session with each speaker. Instructions and elicitation questions for both were asked in Zapotec, in order to attenuate any possible influence of conceptualizations from Spanish. For the free-list phase of the task, Moore told each speaker she was collecting terms for a dictionary (as part of language documentation and revitalization project) and that she wanted all terms they could think of like ‘hill’, ‘river’, ‘jungle/forest’ (dani, guiigu, gui'xhi, respectively). Speakers listed the terms for her, and she wrote them down as best she could. There was no time limit, and the listing of terms continued until speakers could not readily think of any others. Listing sessions lasted from 7 minutes to 26 minutes, 16 minutes on average. The task was audio-recorded. Afterwards, Moore played the recording for the speaker and her assistant, and she transcribed the full list while the speaker and native speaker assistant helped clarify the terms and correct her spelling of it using the popular alphabet. Recordings of the first task have filenames beginning with "ELL" and recordings of the second task have filenames beginning with "ELD". Recordings made in in La Ventosa contain "LAV", those made in Juchitán de Zaragoza contain "JCH", and those made in Santa María Xadani contain "XAD". Filenames also contain references to the numbers used to identify the speakers (1-10) and a date code in MMDDYYYY format. |
