Description | From the introduction of the paper: The most used technique so far [for converting manuscript texts into digital texts] is transcription: a transcriber creating a digital text by typing symbol by symbol while looking at a manuscript text. There have been some projects that work on Latin American languages that have indeed taken advantage of this method (Lillehaughen et al., 2016; Matthew, 2017). But those dealt with colonial documents written in rather well studied indigenous languages (Colonial Zapotec and two Nahuatl languages) and these projects' members either already were language and period paleography experts or were in the proces of acquiring that expertise. For many manuscript collections, there is not a group of scholars that are numerous enough and motivated enough to sustain an expert transcription project. The question that arises from this situation (and the focus of this report) is are specialists necessary for the transcription of indigenous-language manuscript texts? Or more generally we can ask, can someone transcribe a manuscript text written in a language they do not understand? |
