| Description | 2009-03-17 -- 03-19 This recording documents the ritual of the fiesta of San José which takes place in the county seat of San Pedro Pedernal. On the first day, they gather in the church to carry out the activities. Don Carlos Sánchez López (ch'uy k'al) and the president of the church are the principals of the fiesta. At six in the morning, the first prayer begins under the charge of Sr. Carlos Sánchez, with the aim of asking for blessings for all the people, performed along with the fiesta of San José and above all asking for blessings for all the crops: corn, beans, squash and animals. At the end of the prayer, they start to dance and Sr. Carlos Sánchez says a few words. Later they go have breakfast; afterwards they come again to the church to decorate it. The second day they begin to make the candles and they also make a circle of flowers of different colors. Inside this there is corn surrounded by flowers in the form of a cross: white, red, yellow and purple, at each corner they place candles in the color of the flowers and two candles in the middle. And on the sides they place the rattles, incense and tobacco. Don Carlos was interviewed about the significance of this and later he began to pray, after the dance. On the third day at eight in the morning the procession of San José began, when the procession returns, after that they pray in the intersection that is found in front of the church and they went to leave San José in his place, many musicians play, Sr. Carlos gives the last prayer, afterwards he gives thanks for participating in the festival. |
