Description | This video records the "Jelonel", a ceremony of transfer of power (change of authorities) between the departing and incoming mayors, which takes place the 31 of December every three years (the term of office) in Oxchuc. In this ceremony the sacred book of Oxchuc (in Tseltal "Kajwaltik") plays an important role. The change of authorities and the delivery of the batons of office are performed in front of this book, at midnight. At five in the afternoon the "Ch'uy K'aales" (principals) and the Extules are directed to the house of the mayor (president) to bring the sacred book "Kajwaltik." After leaving the presidential palace, they are directed to the house of the incoming president, the Ch'uy K'aales (principals) are charged with going to bring the president and with his staffs, they pull it with a white handkerchief around his neck, they cross themselves as they pass the church, later they are directed to the presidential palace. There they deliver the staffs of office as municipal authorities. They also return the staffs to the outgoing authorities. Also recorded is the speech of thanks of Prof. Jaime Sántiz as incoming president. |
