DescriptionThis recording was made in the town of Josefa Ortiz de Domínguez, Ocosingo county. The activity consists of recording the water festival that takes place every year, in which offerings are made and they venerate the springs so that they will not lack water during the coming year. The principal activities are the prayers and the traditional dances. The prayers are of two types: one performed in traditional style at the spring and the other inside the church. Someone is entrusted in each place with performing the ceremonies. In the church it is in the form of a mass and in the middle of this is performed the traditional prayer. The participants were originally from diverse communities, now living in this township, the majority are from Tenango in Ocosingo county.
The places where the rituals are performed are: at the spring which is located about an hour from the town; at the tank located on the outskirts of the town; and in the town church. In the same way, a feast also takes place in the area around the tank.
After each prayer, they speak about various things. Also, the offer a little pox (a traditional drink) in honor of the festivals. The gentlemen: Sebastián Gómez López (at the spring) and Sebastián Pérez Méndez (at the church), both originally from Tenango.
