Description | In August of 1975 James Howe and Saila (Chief) Gonzalo Salcedo travelled from the island village of Niatupu or Tigantiki to the nearby shore community of Ukkuppa or Playón Grande. Chief Salcedo thus undertook the role of visiting chief described by Sherzer (1983) and Howe (1986). The visit provided an opportunity for Howe to record Chief Salcedo while he sang in a gathering house. (Taping in the gathering house had recently been prohibited in Niatupu.) Howe recorded several cassettes. It rained heavily through the visit, with humidity even higher that usual in San Blas, and some of the tape stuck together briefly, causing problems on at least one of the recordings. The text described here is a chant about the culture hero Inanatili (see Howe and Hirschfeld 1989). About 9 verses were not recorded (because Howe did not immediately realize as the chant began what Salcedo was chanting about), and there are a few problems with the recording. |
