| Description | From the introduction to the paper: In terms of its distribution in the world's languages, lexical tone is not a trait that characterizes the North American linguistic area (Maddieson 2013) and morphological tone, accordingly, is even more marginal in this area. This work contributes to the prosodic documentation of the languages of North America and presents the first description and analysis of the morphological tone in Choguita Rarámuri (Tarahumara), as well as its interaction with lexical tone in this language. As part of a long-term documentation and description project, it is proposed here that tonal melodies in this language are associated to the surface level of morphologically complex words by means of Construction Morphology schemes (Booij 2010) and that this allows for an explanation of the following properties of Choguita Rarámuri morphological tone: (i) there is an arbitrary relationshuip between tone patterns of morphologically related words; (ii) morphological tone is associated with some morphosyntactically heterogenous classes; and (iii) different tone replacive tone strategies depend on the type of tone involved (lexical, morphological, or phrasal) and their paradigmatic distribution. It is argued that although an alternative morphological tone analysis can be proposed, the analysis in terms of constructions predicts the entire range of tonal effects in this language. |
