| Description | From the introduction of the paper: ZOCO [Zoque, Ocotepec] presents a synthetic construction that functions as a means of expression of three types of semantics of secundary predication (2P): a) depictive (1a), b) resultative (1b) and final state (1c). None of the three types is a canonical means of 2P expression because they do not share the definitional trait of canonical 2P constructions, the formal independence of the two predicates. In contrast, in the synthetic construction, the two predicates form part of the same word. In contrast to the synthetic construction, the analytic secondary predication construction or the canonical one makes reference to a construction that has two independent predicates: the principal predicate (1P) and the secondary predicate (2P) as in (2) (Schultze-Berndy and Himmelmann 2004:77-80; Zavala 2004:295-300; Aissen and Zavala 2010:14). In example (2), the 2P provides depictive semantics. In contrast to (2), in the synthetic construction a base word fuses into a group that expresses a meaning associated with a secondary predicate, although they lack the independence trait of the predicates in the canonical construction, as in (3). The purpose of this study is to give an account of the properties of the synthetic construction and how it differs from the analytical construction of ZOCO. |
