DescriptionFrom the introduction to the paper:

The phonological phenomena that have distinguished the Tupí-Guaraní languages have been nasality (Gregores and Suárez 1967; Harrison and Taylor 1971; Lunt 1973; Rivas 1974; Goldsmith 1976, 1999; Barratt 1980; Dooley 1984; Costa 2007; Cardoso 2009) and nasal harmony propogation (Kiparsky 1985; Piggott 1992, 1996; Piggot and van der Hulst 1997; Penner 1993; Drude 2008; Kaiser 2008). Pãĩ Tavyterã Guaraní presents an allophony as one of its most interesting phonological phenomena.

In this work the allophony that is manifested in prefixes belonging to the person category is presented. By means of a study of the allophonies triggered by the type of root to which they are affixed collected in field work, three types of roots are identified in this Guaraní: 1) oral roots without nasalizable consonants; 2) nasal roots with full nasal consonants or nasal vowels; 3) oral roots with emergent nasalizable consonants.
