Description | From the introduction to the paper: The phonological phenomena that have distinguished the Tupí-Guaraní languages have been nasality (Gregores and Suárez 1967; Harrison and Taylor 1971; Lunt 1973; Rivas 1974; Goldsmith 1976, 1999; Barratt 1980; Dooley 1984; Costa 2007; Cardoso 2009) and nasal harmony propogation (Kiparsky 1985; Piggott 1992, 1996; Piggot and van der Hulst 1997; Penner 1993; Drude 2008; Kaiser 2008). Pãĩ Tavyterã Guaraní presents an allophony as one of its most interesting phonological phenomena. [...] In this work the allophony that is manifested in prefixes belonging to the person category is presented. By means of a study of the allophonies triggered by the type of root to which they are affixed collected in field work, three types of roots are identified in this Guaraní: 1) oral roots without nasalizable consonants; 2) nasal roots with full nasal consonants or nasal vowels; 3) oral roots with emergent nasalizable consonants. |
