Description | These annotated field notes were started as part of a UCLA course in linguistic field methods, in which we studied the Pima language (a dialect of O’odham, ISO code: ood) with a native speaker. My fieldwork continued beyond the duration of the course and formed the basis for my masters’ thesis, doctoral qualifying paper and the doctoral dissertation. This study examined a wide range of properties of Pima, including syntactic and morphological structure, lexical properties of a range of lexical items, phonological patterns and phonetic properties of vowels. Funders: UCLA Department of Linguistics (2000-2002, 2004-2005), UCLA Institute of American Cultures via the UCLA American Indian Studies Center (2002-2003), the American Philosophical Society’s Phillips Fund for North Native American Research (2003-2004) |
