Description | There are approximately 1,500 native Bocotas living in Veraguas, Bocas del Toro and Chiriquí provinces in western Panama. The dialect of Bocotás that is spoken here is the Chiriquí dialect. 'The oral narrative of the Bocotás reflects wide thematic variety, in accordance with its contents, the totality of the stories can be situated in two great spheres: mythological and non-mythological. Mythological narratives can be subdivided into three types: a) narratives about mythical beings, in which humans occasionally also participate; b) narratives of mythological beings and animals, and c) narratives about animals. The narrator of this text is Francisco Rodriquez, who immigrated to Costa Rica from Panama. This narration, unlike others in this collection, has no corresponding text. |
