Description | Don Juan provided many examples of stories, oral history, conversation and song (Wildcat songs). His dialect is very distinctive, and reflects the time he spent living in the U.S and interacting with U.S. Kumeyaay speakers (he is a U.S. citizen.) Although he was born in a community very close to San Jose de la Zorra, his dialect is very different from others who live in SJZ. Jon has a very unique idiolect. He grew up in the community of Agua Escondida, very close to San Jose de la Zorra, but left at age 15. Because he was born in the U.S., he was able to spend the better part of his life living in U.S. Kumeyaay communities, namely Viejas and Sycuan, where he absorbed much of those dialects as well. He says he never had the opportunity, that he can recall, to converse with a speaker of the Northern Ipaay dialect. |
