Description | This is a bilingual (Ulwa-Spanish) book about Mangroves with a focus on the intersection of traditional ecological knowledge of the Ulwa people of Nicaragua and marine conservation. The authors of the Ulwa book are Robby Thigpen, Leonzo Knight Julian and Haidey Merly Bautista Salazar of Karawala, Nicaragua. Haidey heard about the project from an anthropologist that works with the Miskitu people of Nicaragua. She wrote to me and told me her people needed these books so their children would not forget who they are. We hope to bring printed copies of these book to Karawala after the threat of the pandemic has passed. The Ulwa live in one village on a tributary of the Rio Grande de Matagalpa that empties in to the Caribbean. The Ulwa community is called Karawala and it is the only place they have ever lived. Ulwa [ulw] is paired with Spanish [es] for Nicaragua. The Ulwa people, like all first nations, have survived culturally thanks to their strong bond with nature, this has kept us grounded, from it we raise our voice together with allied organizations to take care of this unique planet that was given us life, tranquility and hope. Marine Conservation Without Borders is one of them, it is a bearer of dreams that rises from other environments and with different languages to bring a message of protest, but also of hope, an invitation of solidarity with nature from which beings Humans are a fundamental part of it. Leonzo Knight Julian Comunidad Awawak (Karawala) This is the first biocultural STEM curriculum written in Ulwa. We are working with several linguistic groups from Belize, Guatemala and Honduras that also live in Nicaragua. However, this is the first linguistic community we are collaborating with that only lives in Nicaragua. It is also the most endangered linguistic group (L1<250) we have teamed up with. We hope that when the danger of the pandemic is passed we can bring printed copies of this book to Karawala and the be able to work in partnership with the Ulwa to create additional biocultural STEM curricula to document their language and help protect their cultural identity. |
