Description | From the introduction to the paper: This paper presents the tonal system of San Martín Peras Mixtec. This variant's tone system contrasts with those of previously described varieties, including those varieties of the same region and subgrouping, Josserand's Southern Baja (1983). Instead, it shows similarities with the tone system of Yoloxóchitl Mixtec of Guerrero. The San Martín Peras variety has five contrastive tones, of which three are level: high /H/, mid /M/ and low /L/; and two are contour tones: rising /R/ and falling /F/. Each one of the level tones is specified; the mid tone /M/ is not the absence of a lexical tone as in the Santa María Peñoles variety (Daly and Hyman, 2007). The contour tones are units, that is, they are not sequences of level tones. The distribution of the five tones is balanced against the contour tones which, with few exceptions, only occur on the final mora of basic roots. The system does not show any tonal process, like the majority of the already described Mixtec varieties. |
