Description | From the introduction of the paper: Since the publication of the first grammars of Yucatec Maaya in the 17th century up to the end of the 20th century, the prefix x- (~ix) has excluseively been described as nomen actoris of the feminine sex, being applied to references to women and girls as well as some animals when their sex is relevant to the discussion. Examples of the prefix's application beyond nomen actoris exist even in the same sources of the colonial period, but they are not mentioned; the marking of feminine sex was enough. This article will document two current broader and relatively novel applications: names of quotidian articles as well as vocatives for the names of adult men and young men. These applications at least merit a more detailed study of the prefix's reach and its changes over the years, and more broadly raise questions about gender as a classificatory principle. |
