DescriptionThis article explores and analyzes the proper name system in Ancash Quechua which is spoken in the north-central Peruvian Andes. Historically, Quechua people only had first names without surnames, but when the Spanish arrived in the Andean areas of Peru that tradition began to change, and Quechua names were pressured to disappear. However, in an act of linguistic and cultural resistence against the negative attitudes of peninsular people, Quechua speakers began to use alternate linguistic resources from their own language and Quechua cultural perspective. Some examples that demosnstrate particular vitality in the Andean area of Ancash are: a progressive return to using Quechua words for people’s names, use of Quechua hypocoristics and Quechuaized Spanish names and nicknames in order to express affection and friendliness, and the use of other forms of Quechua nicknames to express irony and euphemisms with amazing affect and humor.
Keywords: Anthroponomy, Quechua, proper names, hypocoristics, nicknames for insults,
quechuaization.
