| Description | This recording was made during a community-wide feast in the Nanti community of Montetoni on the Camisea River in southeastern Peru. During feasting, participants form groups and chant together for many hours. Group chanting is characterized by fixed formulas, which the whole group chants, combined with extemporaneous poetry, which is intercalated with the formulas by individual performers. This is a recording of a group of adults chanting a fixed formula, ‘sarixojani’ while some individuals perform extemporaneous xarintaa poetry. One of the participants is wearing a recording unit; no researcher was present at the time of recording. |
