Description [Indigenous]
Language of Indigenous Description
DescriptionOver 100 hours of digital audio and hi-definition video from four Baja Kumiai communities: San Jose de la Zorra, La Huerta, Alamo-Neji, Necua and San Jose Tecate. This is in addition to approximately 100 hours of Ko’alh speech data from Sta. Catarina, which should possibly not be considered Kumiai, being only partially mutually-intelligible with Kumiai. This collection includes many examples of naturally-occurring discourse in context, such as stories, songs, and task-based and hortatory discourse connected to traditional activities such as basketmaking, pottery, childbirth, food collection and preparation, traditional uses of plants, etc., as well as conversation.

Margaret Field wrote the NSF grant that sponsored the collection of data, through San Diego State University. She continues to collaborate with Dr. Amy Miller, the Instituto Nacional de Antropologia e Historia, and Kumiai and Ko’alh speakers to create pedagogical materials and complete a comparative dictionary of Baja Kumiai.
Funded by NSF, the Sycuan Institute on Tribal Gaming, and Fulbright-Comexus.
